How to Read a Brake Pad Test Report: What Importers Need to Know

Why Test Reports Matter
Test reports prove that brake pads have been tested against recognized standards. They are required for customs clearance, certification applications, quality verification, and liability protection.
Key Sections of a Brake Pad Test Report
1. Product identification
This section lists the part number, OE reference, friction material type, and vehicle application. Verify that this matches the product you ordered.
2. Friction coefficient (mu)
The friction coefficient measures stopping force. Cold friction (100-200°C) should be 0.25-0.65. Hot friction (300-400°C) should stay within 15% of cold friction. ECE R90 requires friction to stay within a specific band.
3. Wear rate
Wear rate measures how quickly the pad material erodes. Carbon ceramic: 0.5-1.5 cm³/MJ. Semi-metallic: 1.0-2.5 cm³/MJ. Lower numbers mean longer pad life.
4. Shear strength
Shear strength measures how strongly the friction material is bonded to the backing plate. Minimum requirement is typically 250 N/cm² for ECE R90.
5. Compressibility
Compressibility measures how much the pad material deforms under pressure. The typical limit is 2% at 16 MPa pressure.
How to Verify a Test Report
Check the testing laboratory for CNAS or ILAC-MRA accreditation. Cross-check with certification documents. For large orders, consider independent testing at a third-party lab.
Red Flags in Test Reports
No lab name or accreditation number, all values exactly at minimum, report older than 2 years, mismatched part numbers, and no test conditions specified are all red flags.
