What Is Brake Pad Bed-In?

Bed-in (also called burnishing or conditioning) is the process of gradually transferring a thin layer of friction material from the brake pad onto the rotor surface. This creates a smooth, even contact surface between the pad and rotor.
Without proper bed-in, the pad and rotor surfaces are not fully matched, contact is uneven causing hot spots, stopping power is reduced by 20-40%, and noise and vibration are common.

Why Bed-In Matters for Brake Performance

The bed-in process directly affects stopping distance, noise levels, pad life, and rotor life. Properly bedded pads stop 20-40% shorter than unbedded pads.

How to Bed In New Brake Pads

Step 1: Find a safe road

Choose a road with little traffic where you can safely accelerate and brake repeatedly.

Step 2: Moderate stops (10-15 repetitions)

Accelerate to 30-35 mph, apply moderate brake pressure to slow to 5 mph without stopping completely. Repeat 10-15 times with 30 seconds cooling between stops.

Step 3: Firm stops (5-10 repetitions)

Accelerate to 40-45 mph, apply firm brake pressure to slow to 5 mph. Do not engage ABS. Repeat 5-10 times with 60 seconds cooling between stops.

Step 4: Cool down

Drive normally for 5-10 minutes without heavy braking. Allow brakes to cool completely before parking.

Common Bed-In Mistakes

Hard stops too early cause glazing. Complete stops during bed-in leave uneven deposits. Not beding in new rotors with new pads reduces performance.

Bed-In for Different Pad Materials

Carbon ceramic pads need 200-300 miles of moderate driving. Semi-metallic pads bed in faster at 100-200 miles. Low-metallic pads are similar to semi-metallic but produce more dust during bed-in.
